Digital signage and the sectors using it

Updated yesterday

❓How does it work?

3 elements make up a digital signage solution:

a screen: it displays the content (image, video, web page..)

e.g. Samsung, Sharp, LG, Philipps, Iiyama

The screens used in digital signage are professional monitors: more robust, brighter, they are designed for intensive display, both in portrait and landscape mode.

a player:
a mini PC (integrated or external) connected to the network on one side and to the screen on the other (NUC, Raspberry...).
It sends the video signal to the screen via an HDMI cable.
These players work with Android, ChromeOS, Windows and Tizen OS.

a software solution
: it allows you to control the players/screens remotely, to plan the content, to have visibility on the connected or not connected screens. In SaaS mode, it is accessible from a web browser.

πŸ‘€ Uses

Digital signage is present in many sectors and covers many uses.

🏒 Corporate

Communicating with employees is crucial for a company: digital signage complements internal media: intranet, newsletter, legal notices.

Better still, it makes visible information that is compartmentalised to solutions, business lines or BUs.

The screens can be placed at the reception desk, in open spaces/corridors, break rooms, refectories, and broadcast internal information: new arrivals, financial results, practical information about the building, publications from the intranet or the CRM, etc.

For each location, a type of content will be relevant.

The use of touch is also very appreciated, especially to replace the traditional legal display.

Comeen Play's little extra

An Office 365 / Google Workspace connector: allows users to directly distribute PPT/Gslide or other elements of their office suite on the screens (Excel, Gsheet, etc).

These are automatically updated when the document is modified in the drive.

πŸ›οΈ Retail

Digital signage in retail chains is mainly dedicated to commercial communication in the aisles or at the checkout line: promotion, loyalty card, next commercial operation, brand message...

There are several advantages for retailers:

  • modernize the point of sale and the customer experience

  • replace traditional POS advertising that is long to produce and tedious to deploy

  • manage communication from the head office

  • customize communication according to regions/store + more flexibility and speed in the creation/distribution of promotional content

The biggest challenge in retail is content creation: it is expensive and quickly becomes obsolete (a commercial operation lasts on average 15 days).

Another use case: internal communication. The screens are installed in the break rooms and allow the head office to communicate internal messages within the network, and the shop to communicate operational content: planning, security...

Comeen Play's little extra

- Synchronization with the brand's social networks: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter... the content is automatically updated on the screens
- Creation of promotional templates on the Designer, directly linked to a data source
=> automatic update of content

- Refined rights management to give a shop control over its screens for a type of content defined by headquarters
- Contextualized broadcasting according to the weather or a connected object

🚚 Logistics

2 challenges :

  • internal communication

  • operational communication

The logistics environment is essentially made up of people who do not have access to offices and therefore to computers. This population is called "Deskless" or "frontline worker". Without a digital identity in the company, they are deprived of communication such as newsletters or intranets.

Screens are therefore the best way of getting internal information down to this population, with screens in the break rooms for example.

In a warehouse, access to operational communication remains crucial: incoming flow, goods to be loaded, planning, safety rules... The frontline must have access to all this information to have a vision of the activity of the platform and the tasks to be carried out. Here, the screens are the best way to make the information visible. They are installed near the docks, in the briefing areas, etc.

Comeen Play's little extra

- Real-time data distribution from business solutions: Shiptify, Reflex, Data Studio

- Creation of business templates from the Comeen Play Designer

- Synchronisation of screens with the intranet: Lumapps, Sharepoint, Yammer

🏭 Industry

The issues and problems are similar to the logistics environment ⬆️ and the principle of frontline workers is also present.

  • internal communication (see above)

  • operational communication
Access to production data remains crucial: product, remaining production, safety rules, work accidents...
Screens are here, in addition to being a communication tool, a visual management tool.

Touch screens are also popular in this context, as they allow frontline workers to consult business information: process/product sheets, planning, etc.

Comeen Play's little extra

- Real-time data distribution from business solutions: Data Studio, Excel...

- Kiosk mode of Comeen Play, allowing to transform a touch screen into a document kiosk for the frontline worker

- Creation of business templates from the Comeen Play designer

- Synchronisation of screens with the intranet: Lumapps, Sharepoint, Yammer

πŸŽ™οΈ Event management

Visual communication at events is essential: the host needs to communicate with visitors to the site and exhibitors on their stands.

Orientation, planning, real time results or advertising message... The type of content is varied and targeted.

The screens are located at the entrance to the site, in the aisles and on the exhibitors' stands.

Comeen Play's little extra

- ease of use

- advanced user rights management / screen group management

- connection to social networks

πŸŽ“ Education

The life of a school is based on timetables, rooms, speakers and rules. Students or teachers, the need to access this information is important. Here again, screens are the best way to share it: reception, floor, foyer or teachers' room, the locations are varied.

Comeen Play's little extra

- Real-time display of schedules (e.g. hyperplanning)

- Advanced rights management (delegate to the association)

- Public transport connectors: display upcoming trams, buses, subways near the school

Issues and market

Problematic

Launching a digital signage project is not just a matter of hanging a TV on a wall.

There are several aspects:

  • deployment: how to install several screens in different geographical locations

  • network: connecting the player/screen to the network

  • maintenance: if a screen breaks down, who provides on-site maintenance?

All these elements make it a real IT project with several actors to convince at the customer's site:

  • IT department (deployment and network)

  • Communication (users of the solution)

  • HR (users of the solution)

The integrator therefore has a real role to play:

  1. advice on the solution to be used,

  2. choice of hardware (player/screen)

  3. deployment project management

  4. user training (+ other services such as content creation)

  5. maintenance

Market(s)

The digital signage market is extremely vast given the countless use cases (see above).

In a few years, the solutions have evolved, the hardware too, and digital signage has been democratized.

There are many sectors and companies to be equipped but also a significant number of screens already installed and therefore of screens to be renewed.

The number of solutions present on the market is very important, and the companies have difficulty in finding their way around (you therefore have a card to play!). There are solutions specialised in retail, advertising agencies, industry or corporate, and others that are not really complete.

There are 2 issues in a digital signage project for a company:

  • deployment: will IT validate the solution? Is it time-consuming for this department?

  • content: who will feed the screens? And with what? Do I have the resources in-house?

Companies are therefore looking for a solution that is

  • easy to deploy

  • simple to use (without training and with documentation)

  • connected to a maximum number of business solutions to save on content creation (Office 365/Google Workspace, Salesforce, Yammer, Instagram, Lumapps...)

Good thing that Comeen Play meets all these criteria πŸ˜‰
